Graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute, 1959; Candidate of technical sciences degree, 1964; aeronautical engineer at Korolyov Design bureau; was involved in development of Vostok spacecrafts; he was selected as cosmonaut on 27.05.1968 (TsKBEM-1); trained for the Soviet lunar landing program and later for a Buran-flight; at time President of Soviet Chess Federation; in 1993 elected as a member of the Russian Parliament, The Duma (in December 2007 not re-elected); died after a prolonged serious illness.
