Born as Aleksei Kuraitis. His Lithuanian born father was jailed 1939 into a gulag, so Aleksei took in 1950 the maiden name of his mother; graduated from Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School with an engineering degree, 1957; candidate of technical sciences degree, 1967; doctorate of technical sciences degree, 1973, worked as engineer in the Korolyov Design bureau; was selected as cosmonaut on 27.05.1968 (TsKBEM-1); later Rector of Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School; since 1991 retired.
